What's the Difference Between Bouldering / Top Rope / Lead Climbing?
Bouldering is climbing up to 15ft (in gym) off the ground without the use of ropes or climbing gear. Pads are provided throughout the bouldering areas and participation in a Safety Orientation is required prior to climbing. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and does not require a partner.
Top Roping is climbing up to 50ft (in gym) on a rope that is already attached to the top of the wall while being belayed by a certified partner below. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and requires a partner(s). Belay certification is required prior to climbing. Belay Classes are offered daily, visit a location’s “classes” page for more information or to sign up.
Lead Climbing refers to climbing on our full height walls in areas that do not already have a rope attached at the top. Unlike Top Roping, Lead climbers must bring the rope with them as they progress up the wall. Leading is an advanced form of climbing and not recommended until you have a strong Top Rope climbing foundation. Lead Certification is required prior to leading in our gyms. Classes are offered several times a month at our rope gyms, please review the requirements prior to signing up for this class on a location’s “classes” page.
- Please note:
- Momentum Lehi, SODO, and Silver Street are Bouldering Only gyms.
Momentum Millcreek, Sandy, and Katy offer both Rope Climbing and Bouldering. - We do not allow anyone other than Momentum employees to provide belay instruction inside our gyms.

Healthy activity
Good stuff they guide for first time for climbing
Very Clean
The community is wonderful
I can’t wait to come back when my college kids are in town and again to introduce my nieces to the amazing world of indoor climbing when the temps are hot in July.
My son (14) attends Youth Club 2 climbing twice a week in the evenings for the past 3 years and still loves it because of the relaxed atmosphere and amazing coaches.
Thank you! 👍
And the first wall climb starting from the left side on the 2nd floor, being assecible to kids especially, on that climb a kid can easily swing on the rope to far left to the open space and fall from the 2nd floor. Otherwise being a beginner, all else was great.
Thanks to whoever proposed that idea!
Great coaches and she has fun
A great variety of climbing routes for newbie on up to Uber experienced.
My son and I and his buddy spent all day there and were never bored.
Look for deals on Groupon to save a little cash.
Friday night wasn't too crowded even with one birthday party. Have a nice selection of various challenging routes for bouldering and auto belay. I didn't do any of the lead climbing or belay walls but as a beginner there was enough to keep me and my party occupied for hours. Muscles gave out long before I could possibly do all the routes.
Special shout out to Fabian who checked my party in and checked on us later in the day. Awesome guy!
Our instructor Dana was awesome ! Went out of her way to guide us and help us .
The two 2 hour classes were a great pace and allowed us to practice falls & belaying, and develop technique. I would definitely recommend this class considering a lead class in our home state, Arizona, is $100 for 1 hour. 75$ for 4 hours? So worth it.
You can do the lead belay test a day after the class. If you can, I would because the class wasn’t that tiresome and the setting is top tier.
Thanks Sam and Riley!
I only boulder, so I can’t speak to the rope climbing here. The bouldering area is small in comparison to the rope section, but still big enough to include a variety of routes/walls. It never felt overly crowded. The routes are thoughtfully set. There are fewer unusual/surprising problems than the Heights location, but there were a few fun jump starts etc. even at low grades.
Service was always very friendly and quick. The walls and holds aren’t spotless, but the place overall is clean and inviting.
Overall, I highly recommend checking it out, especially since a membership also gets you into their huge bouldering-only location in the Heights.
They have kept the quality of everything over the past few years, even during the pandemic. The staff has been consistently good as well.
If you've ever wanted to give climbing a try, this is a great place to do it!
Overall very satisfied
They had a kid's bouldering room which is in the back, where the kids could start off, without going too high, build some confidence and get a hang of how to use the grips. After they did that for about 40 minutes, they wanted to tackle the climbing wall.
On the climbing wall, you need to use the harness. The staff was nice enough to put it on my kids. Since I wasn't certified to belay my kids, they had a self-belay section, where they could climb up to 20 feet and the self-belay system will guide them down automatically. Letting go off the wall and trusting the system, took them a little time to get use to.
We are definitely going back. Next time, they want to try the 40 feet all.
Only improvement needed is fixing their ratings. They are currently incredibly soft.
Updated: ratings have gotten a lot more reasonable since first opening.
